How we use Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Therapy to Help Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

ABA Therapy is a scientifically certified approach to understanding behaviour and how it is influenced by the environment. Since the 1960s, ABA therapists have been applying this method to help children with Autism and related developmental disorders.

ABA Therapy places emphasis on the principles that rationalize how learning takes place. Positive reinforcement is one such principle. When behaviour is followed by some sort of incentive or reward, chances are the behaviour is more likely to be repeated. Over many years of study, the field of ABA Therapy has developed many techniques for increasing desired behaviours and reducing undesired one that may interrupt the learning process.

ABA Therapy is the utilisation of these techniques and principles to bring about significant and good change in behaviour.

ABA Therapy can be applied in structured situations such as a classroom lesson as well as in “everyday” situations such as family dinnertime or the neighbourhood playground. Some ABA therapy sessions comprises of one-on-one interaction between the therapist and the child. Other times, even a group session may be beneficial for the child.

These days, ABA Therapy is widely recognized as a safe and successful form of early intervention for children and even adults with autism. It is greatly sanctioned by various national and international agencies.
